A matric certificate increases the likelihood of young people’s ability to secure work. But What happens when learners drop out of school before obtaining their matric certificate? Matrics ‘on the Fringe’ shines a light on the issue of certification. Based on research by Youth Capital and Stellenbosch University, the brief shows that 250 000 young people are attempting to obtain their matric certificate through the Second Chance Matric Programme, outside of the full-time schooling system; but these young people are not reported by the Department of Basic Education. What can we do to support them?
